I’m a journalist who codes for the Tampa Bay Times. I grew up in rural Illinois, got my associate’s at Sauk Valley Community College, and studied journalism at UofI. I was introduced to programming through a weeklong Adobe Flash segment in one of my classes junior year. I enjoyed solving logic puzzles, so that summer I bought some books and taught myself to write Javascript. Senior year I spent my days studying journalism in class and working at the student paper; I spent my nights and weekends writing servers and going to hackathons. I graduated in 2015 and came to work for the Times, where I use code to create graphics, crunch numbers on statewide and national investigations, and write publishing software.
