As a child, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I found my way to journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I worked at a series of smaller newspapers before coming to the Times, where I was part of a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for exposing violence at Florida's underfunded mental hospitals.

On Nov. 12, 1914, John Evans a black laborer from Dunnellon was condemned by a secret council of 15 of St. Petersburg’s most influential citizens. He was then turned over to a mob of 1500 white residents and murdered. The location is where a mob hung and shot Evans, then sold postcards of the gruesome murder.
